U15 Cup – Sileby B v Barrow 19 May 2010
Late breaking news that Kunal was locked in his room to revise sent Tracey back home for kit to allow Jack Nightingale to step in to make up the X1.
Absence of Ollie James’ kitbag at 6.00pm meant a rapidly reorganised opening pairing of David Iliffe and Sam Nightingale being nominated to set about the Sileby attack. And they did.
Steady progress at a regular 6+ an over was maintained as Sam steered the ball into gaps and David belted it to, and between, fielders.
Neither looked in danger and gave few opportunities for Sileby to break through.
Eventually David looked to swipe one too many and lost his leg stump for a fine 49, (including 8 fours) with Barrow on 99 in the 14th over.
Tom Moores joined Sam and continued the good scoring rate until Tom was bowled in the 20th over for 23. (4 fours)
Baz Odedra came in with 3 balls left, and the run chase resulted in Sam being run out off the last ball for 39, (3 fours) Baz on 1 N.O. and the Barrow total 146 for 3.
The first ball of the Sileby innings sent the opener back as David Iliffe knocked back his leg stump.
The good start got better, after only 4 balls Sileby were 3 down with zero on the board after a repeat from David and a run out.
Astute stand-in skipper McParland smelled a rat and immediately removed David from the attack, suspecting Sileby were holding back their better batters.
Step up Ollie J from the road end, who server up a double wicket maiden in his 2nd over, (courtesy of catches by Ben Pole and Jack N), giving him more wickets in one over than he got all last season. Credit the coaches -It can only get better for you Ollie.
Yet another run out effectively sealed Sileby’s fate at 6 down for less than 20.
Sileby stemmed the wicket fall and fought back well through O’Connor (32) Mayer (15) DeMilo (N.O. 12)and Banks (8), perhaps giving credence to Francis’ olfactory senses, but with further wickets for Alex Carruthers and two more for David, (final figures of 4 wkts for 3 runs, 2 of those off the very last ball) Sileby finished on 110 for 9.
Barrow won by 36 runs. John Shipman
