U17 Match Report
Barrow Town v Bardon Hill (Home) 18th May 2009 League
Barrow Town 124 for 4 Wkts
Bardon Hill 105 for 7 Wkts
Barrow won by 19 runs
On another cold night at Nottingham Road Barrow hosted Bardon Hill in the first U17 League game of the season. Barrow won the toss and batted first with Tom Shipman and Tim Taylor posting 90 for the first wicket. Shipman played very well making 35 hitting a number of boundaries including one huge six and Taylor also batted well continuing his rich run of form making 45 including some cracking shots off his legs. At the fall of the wicket in came Tim Wilson and he stroked the ball around the park scoring a run a ball 18 and he was well supported by Nick Southwell who got bat on ball and made 7. It was left to Jonty Rye and Mark Smith to scamper some vital runs at the end leaving Barrow with a total of 124 for 4. At half way this did seem a bit light and John Upton was breathing a little easier having promised to stand the lads a can of drink if they won!!
The Barrow lads had other ideas and Taylor and Wilson bowled straight and largely pitched the ball up. The reward? Two openers clean bowled. Wilson took 1 for 9 off 3 overs and Taylor 2 for 14 off 4 overs. David Iliffe bowled a couple of overs down the hill and Mark Smith sent down 4 tidy overs up the hill into the wind. It was left to Ryan Dew with 1 for 19 off 4 overs and Shipman 1 for 15 off 3 overs to see Barrow home. Strangely Tom appeared very happy with his wicket?
A word about the fielding. The lads have worked exceptionally hard on this part of the game and the rewards are now starting to show. Two run outs, some excellent stops and a very good wicket keeping show by Jonty Rye behind the stumps. The standards have been set and now the challenge is to keep these high.
The next challenge is Newton Linford away and all players are asked to give Gavin Noon and John Wilson their availability as soon as possible.
